The 2010 Ford Taurus is headed to dealership lots this summer, which may soon make the 2009 Taurus one of the best deals in the large car class. Unlike a lot of aging designs, this one makes more sense now than it did five years ago.

The 2009 Ford Taurus is not the most exciting large car to look at -- the Chrysler 300 has that wrapped up. It's not the most refined -- the Toyota Avalon's cabin outclasses the Ford's. It's not a great performer -- its acceleration lags behind several competitors. Instead, it is quietly one of the best values in its class -- it consistently scores in the top half of its class on every measure.

It offers cavernous space for people and cargo. It is one of the most fuel-efficient large cars. Its crash test scores are among the best available, and it is one of the few large sedans available with all-wheel-drive.

USA Today makes the case for the Taurus this way: "You need size and traction. You don't care for thrills behind the wheel; your blood pressure and heart rate are high enough already. Your idea of automotive excellence involves a quiet interior and predictable overall behavior. ... Step right up. Taurus could be your new best friend." For 2009, Ford has added Electronic Stability Control, as well as a new base SE trim.

It's also a great time to get a deal on the 2009 Taurus. A vastly more attractive 2010 Taurus has just reached showrooms (there's even an SHO version) -- and history says that will drive down the price of remaining 2009 models.

The Taurus can be bought in base SE, popularly-equipped SEL and more well-appointed Limited trims. Most models are front-wheel-drive, but SEL and Limited models are available with all-wheel drive.

Though the Escape was officially redesigned in 2008, upgrades for this year have changed its performance significantly. Auto reviewers, while disappointed in the 2008 model's driving dynamics, say the 2009 changes are for the better.

Major upgrades include more power for the engines and a six-speed automatic transmission to replace the four-speed, as well as updated brakes and steering. "For small SUV buyers looking for a little more bang for the fuel-pump buck, the Escape's revisions couldn't have come sooner," says Automobile Magazine. The Escape's excellent fuel economy is near the top of the small SUV class. Even so, a few reviewers still feel the revisions aren't enough to distinguish the Escape from its competition. For an even smoother-riding SUV with equally excellent fuel economy, consider the Toyota RAV4.

The 2009 Ford Escape is available in three trims -- the base XLS, XLT and top-of-the-line Limited. A four-wheel drive system is optional. For even better fuel economy with minimal performance impact, consider the Ford Escape Hybrid, which is reviewed separately.

Be sure to check for current Ford Deals that may be available on a new Escape. Or, you may want to wait until late 2009, when the 2010 Escape receives even more upgrades. These will include a standard integrated spotter mirror that makes it easier for drivers to check their blind spots.
