The 2009 Hyundai Elantra ranks 4 out of 37 Affordable Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 43 published reviews and test drives of the Hyundai Elantra, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Elantra has a low base price and great fuel economy. Plus many say it has one of the most comfortable and spacious cabins in the small car class. Throw in its excellent value over time, and its easy to see why the Elantra won the U.S. News Best Car for the Money Award for the compact car class.

The 2009 Hyundai Elantra's good traits outweigh its bad ones. It offers pleasing cargo capacity and expansive passenger space, has plenty of convenience features to appease small-car shoppers and confident road performance. In this stingy economy, reviewers also highlight the Elantra's lengthy warranty and low MSRP as special plusses compared to its competitors.

The Elantra's practicality, comfortable cabin aind numerous safety features prove that small-car owners are not willing to sacrifice quality when looking for affordability. A good alternative with similar characteristics is the Toyota Corolla, because it also has a simple but elegant interior, plus it gets great gas mileage from its base engine.

But if you associate a small car with sportiness, you'll probably find both the Elantra and Corolla are too streamlined. The Mazda3 and the Honda Civic offer a crisper driving experience than the Elantra, and their stylish exteriors might appeal to you over the Hyundai's more traditional design.

There were no significant changes to the 2009 Elantra sedan, but Hyundai has debuted a five-door hatchback trim, the Elantra Touring. Both body styles feature the same four-cylinder engine.

  • "The Hyundai Elantra offers a roomy interior for the class, a good package of safety equipment, and a strong warranty." -- New Car Test Drive
  • "The fourth-generation Elantra follows Hyundai's current formula for success: offer value. Even base models come with standard ABS, power mirrors and windows, and six airbags. It trails competitors like the VW Rabbit and Honda Civic in the fun-to-drive index, though." -- Car and Driver
  • "Drivers might find themselves, as I did, spending a lot of time thinking about all of the other vehicles -- new and even late-model used -- they probably would buy instead of this one that would be a quieter and better ride." -- Newsday
  • "Elantra matches any class rival for refinement, space, and comfort. And it beats most for safety with standard front side airbags, curtain side airbags, and ABS. A robust feel, attractive prices and Hyundai's strong warranty also make Elantra a Recommended pick." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Hyundai has become a favorite with the kind of people who sharpen their pencils before making their purchase. These days, Hyundai gives them value and quality, not cheapness." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "In the field of compact hatchbacks, the 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring, with its $18,495 base price and 125 cubic feet of interior volume, symbolizes the economy-plus ticket." -- Motor Trend
