Ford Escape - What the Auto Press Says

The 2009 Ford Escape ranks 8 out of 26 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 13 published reviews and test drives of the Ford Escape, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Though the Escape was officially redesigned in 2008, upgrades for this year have changed its performance significantly. Auto reviewers, while disappointed in the 2008 model's driving dynamics, say the 2009 changes are for the better.

Major upgrades include more power for the engines and a six-speed automatic transmission to replace the four-speed, as well as updated brakes and steering. "For small SUV buyers looking for a little more bang for the fuel-pump buck, the Escape's revisions couldn't have come sooner," says Automobile Magazine. The Escape's excellent fuel economy is near the top of the small SUV class. Even so, a few reviewers still feel the revisions aren't enough to distinguish the Escape from its competition. For an even smoother-riding SUV with equally excellent fuel economy, consider the Toyota RAV4.

The 2009 Ford Escape is available in three trims -- the base XLS, XLT and top-of-the-line Limited. A four-wheel drive system is optional. For even better fuel economy with minimal performance impact, consider the Ford Escape Hybrid, which is reviewed separately.

Be sure to check for current Ford Deals that may be available on a new Escape. Or, you may want to wait until late 2009, when the 2010 Escape receives even more upgrades. These will include a standard integrated spotter mirror that makes it easier for drivers to check their blind spots.

  • "With these updates, Ford has certainly created a better Escape. Has it caught up to the leaders in the market niche it used to dominate? No, but it's more refined than ever, has more gusto while using less gas, and offers better ride and handling." -- Car and Driver
  • "Compared with other compact SUVs with newer designs, Escape and the similar Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner feel dated. With the V6 engine, fuel economy trails class leaders as well." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Fully-featured, capable, intelligently sized and vying for best fuel economy in its class, the Escape is a many-time best selling compact SUV with excellent owner loyalty. That tells us something, and its broad appeal is strengthened by the 2009's extra power and economy." -- MSN
  • "You won't find anyone spouting off about quarter mile times or comparing the styling against anything from Italy, but Ford seems to be making progress on its mini-UV's. It says something to note that we wouldn't be averse to actually spending a week with one." -- Jalopnik
  • "Despite substantial improvements for 2008 and more power for 2009, Ford's Escape is showing its age when compared to newer competition. Still, that doesn't mean it's not a good vehicle or a good buy." -- Drive Chicago

Escape Performance - 7.6 (Good)

With upgraded engines, a new rear anti-roll bar, and six-speed automatic transmission, the 2009 Ford Escape performs better than ever. "We had the opportunity to drive '08 and '09 models back-to-back and can confirm that the extra ratios and horsepower are a big help to what used to be a sluggish little truck," says Automobile Magazine. Another big plus is the SUV's fuel economy, which bests most others in its class. Still, a few test drivers still say the Escape just isn't as refined as competitors. continue

Escape Exterior - NA

Not much has changed since the Escape's exterior underwent a redesign last year. Despite its more muscular appearance, reviewers aren't entirely thrilled. "Besides the fact it's begun to seem outdated vs. the competition, the '08 Escape demonstrates that, in appearance, Ford again has mistaken clutter, confusion and chrome for class," says USA Today. Exterior modifications for 2009 increase the SUV's aerodynamics. continue

Escape Interior - 8.0 (Very Good)

With last year's redesign, the Escape made significant improvements in its interior comfort and quality. The Chicago Sun-Times says, "The new quieter and more comfortable interior looks as if from a costlier vehicle, with more upscale features and new storage options." Reviewers especially like the piano-black trim and softer materials in the cabin, along with the new optional SYNC multimedia system. But a few reviewers still don't like the look of the cabin. continue

Escape Safety - 9.9 (Excellent)

Like its predecessor, the 2009 Ford Escape earns excellent crash test ratings. It's even designated as a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2009 Escape comes with plenty of air bags and a stability control system. continue

Escape Reliability - 7.0 (Good)

The 2009 Ford Escape reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). The 2009 Ford Escape comes with a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. continue
