2009 Ford Taurus

2009 Ford Taurus
Ford Taurus - What the Auto Press Says

The 2009 Ford Taurus ranks 5 out of 9 Affordable Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 34 published reviews and test drives of the Ford Taurus, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2010 Ford Taurus is headed to dealership lots this summer, which may soon make the 2009 Taurus one of the best deals in the large car class. Unlike a lot of aging designs, this one makes more sense now than it did five years ago.

The 2009 Ford Taurus is not the most exciting large car to look at -- the Chrysler 300 has that wrapped up. It's not the most refined -- the Toyota Avalon's cabin outclasses the Ford's. It's not a great performer -- its acceleration lags behind several competitors. Instead, it is quietly one of the best values in its class -- it consistently scores in the top half of its class on every measure.

It offers cavernous space for people and cargo. It is one of the most fuel-efficient large cars. Its crash test scores are among the best available, and it is one of the few large sedans available with all-wheel-drive.

USA Today makes the case for the Taurus this way: "You need size and traction. You don't care for thrills behind the wheel; your blood pressure and heart rate are high enough already. Your idea of automotive excellence involves a quiet interior and predictable overall behavior. ... Step right up. Taurus could be your new best friend." For 2009, Ford has added Electronic Stability Control, as well as a new base SE trim.

It's also a great time to get a deal on the 2009 Taurus. A vastly more attractive 2010 Taurus has just reached showrooms (there's even an SHO version) -- and history says that will drive down the price of remaining 2009 models.

The Taurus can be bought in base SE, popularly-equipped SEL and more well-appointed Limited trims. Most models are front-wheel-drive, but SEL and Limited models are available with all-wheel drive.

  • "The 2009 Ford Taurus may not be the sexiest choice, but its combination of spaciousness and safety make it a worthy entrant in the full-size sedan segment." -- Edmunds
  • "The Taurus offers strong acceleration, good fuel economy, and plenty of passenger space. It might still trail the Chrysler 300 for eye appeal and the Toyota Avalon for refinement, but this Ford is a solid Recommended pick for all it has to offer." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Basically, if the Camry and Accord are a dimensional squeeze and the Avalon is a financial pinch, the Taurus could be just the right Fahrenheit porridge." -- Motor Trend
  • "For 2009, the Taurus continues to offer consumers a roomy and safe full-size sedan, set to do battle with the likes of Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Dodge Charger. With its fresh look and low entry-level price tag, the Taurus is better than it's ever been and worth a look for those seeking a sedan that can comfortably hold a family of five."-- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Ideal for a buyer seeking comfortable transportation at a Ford price." -- Newsday

Taurus Performance - 7.8 (Good)

The 2009 Ford Taurus is a comfortable commuter and road-trip car, but no athlete. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel cautions that "there should be no illusions about sport-sedan handling" from Taurus drivers. But the automotive press doesn't find the car too weak for everyday needs. continue

Taurus Exterior - 6.9 (Mediocre)

The 2009 Taurus' exterior doesn't impress anyone. The Detroit News speaks for many when it says that, even after a 2008 update, the Taurus "still falls short of striking a pose as dramatic as other large sedans, such as the Chrysler 300." continue

Taurus Interior - 8.5 (Very Good)

The 2009 Ford Taurus offers a lot of space, even by large sedan standards -- but does it in more compact external dimensions than previous models. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel says "it's about the same size inside, with the same trunk space, as the full-size, rear-drive Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis, although it's nearly a foot shorter for easier parking." Its seats are comfortable and the Taurus is available with the latest cabin electronics -- but it isn't the kind of near-luxury cabin that some of the top cars in this class offer. continue

Taurus Safety - 9.9 (Excellent)

The 2009 Taurus is built on the same chassis, and with much of the same safety equipment, as the Volvo S80. It has the safety test scores you would expect from a high-end luxury car made by the most safety-conscious automaker -- at a little more than a third of the price. The Taurus is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Top Safety Pick" in the large car class. continue

Taurus Reliability - 7.0 (Good)

The 2009 Ford Taurus reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). Ford's standard warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles. continue
