The 2009 BMW 3-Series ranks 1 out of 17 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 98 published reviews and test drives of the BMW 3-Series, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

To most of the automotive press, the BMW 3-Series has been the entry-level luxury car that all others are measured against for many years. The 2009 edition carries that title well, but a few competitors have inched so close to this car that buyers might want to comparison shop before laying down a deposit.

Few cars have collected a trunk full of awards like this one. The BMW 3-Series has been one of Car and Driver's "10Best" for 17 consecutive years.

The driving dynamics of the 2009 BMW 3-Series are almost unparalleled. It offers a selection of powerful engines, including a strong twin-turbo diesel that offers tremendous off-the-line torque with good fuel economy. With near 50/50 weight distribution and a suspension tuned for sporty driving, the 3-Series is renowned for its exhilarating handling.

The exterior of the sedan and wagon versios of the 2009 3-Series have seen a subtle refresh, toning down styling that some had deemed awkward. Coupe and Convertible editions have not been changed.

Still, shoppers might want to consider the Inifiniti G37 before laying down a deposit on a 3-Series. The G37's engine is not as refined as those available in the 3-Series, but some say the car is a tighter handler.

The 2009 BMW 3-Series is available as a sedan, a coupe, a wagon or a hardtop convertible. Coupe and sedan models come in rear-wheel drive 328i and 335i models, and all-wheel-drive 328i xDrive and 335i xDrive editions. 335 models feature twin turbochargers not available on the 328s.

  • "Subtle styling updates and an available broad-shouldered diesel power plant put a layer of icing on our favorite entry-level luxury car, the 2009 BMW 3 Series. The 2009 BMW 3 Series is poised to remain America's best-selling luxury car, and for good reason -- it's an honest-to-goodness driver's car that's nonetheless comfortable and stylish enough to appeal to a wide range of consumers." -- Edmunds
  • "With dynamic capabilities second to none, the 3-Series remains the benchmark for sporty compacts. A full complement of body styles and available all-wheel drive add to the appeal. Base prices are reasonable for this class, though BMW charges extra for popular amenities many competitors include as standard equipment." -- Consumer Guide
  • "We're happy to report that the car remains just as delightful in this newest iteration." -- Car and Driver
  • "Thanks to BMW's fanatical pursuit of driving excellence, not to mention increased pressure from the likes of Infiniti, the 335i has a death grip on Automobile Magazine's back-road crown." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "There are many worthy competitors in the entry-luxe category these days -- and it's getting more crowded all the time -- but the 3 remains at the head of the pack." -- U.S. News
  • "With streamlined aggression and more power and performance, the 3 is clearly stronger than ever, so much so that there may be no competition at all." -- Motor Week
  • "Maybe we should give it a lifetime achievement award. We didn't set out hoping to give the 3-Series another All-Star award-this is the car's thirteenth-but then we got in the car and started driving ... The 3-Series is the car that instantly makes any mope who slides behind its wheel a better driver." -- The Auto Channel

3-Series Performance - 9.3 (Excellent)

Every version of the 2009 BMW 3-Series offers sports car handling in a family car package. For shoppers looking for straight-line speed to go with the canyon-carving balance, a selection of engines are offered. "No matter which model you choose, the 3 Series' world-class suspension, steering and brakes will provide hours of entertainment on twisty two-lane byways," raves Edmunds. Most reviewers find the car a comfortable commute cruiser as well. continue

3-Series Exterior - 9.0 (Excellent)

Motor Week calls the sleek look of the BMW 3-Series "streamlined aggression." For 2009, BMW has given 3-Series sedans the same hood and fascia as last year's coupe, and toned down the look of the heavily-criticized trunk. The changes are subtle -- and for the convertible and coupe version, there are no changes -- but reviewers are happy with them. continue

3-Series Interior - 8.1 (Very Good)

The interior of the 2009 BMW 3-Series is comfortable and built from materials that luxury car buyers expect. BMW interiors have always emphasized the driver's position, and this one is no different. Still, some reviewers say they are not up to the comfort standards of Lexus or Acura, and it lacks storage space. The 3-Series also features several quirky technologies that Cars.com characterizes as "answers to questions nobody asked." continue

3-Series Safety - 9.4 (Excellent)

The BMW 3-Series earns five out of five stars in government side-impact crash tests, but only four stars for frontal-impacts -- in a class where perfect scores are taken for granted. It offers a full suite of safety equipment, including a unique wet-weather braking system that only BMW has ever offered. continue

3-Series Reliability - 7.0 (Good)

The 2009 BMW 3-Series reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). All 3-Series cars are covered by a four-year or 50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. continue
